I wonder more and more about the Brits:
Florence Edward Claridge from London displays her hat at Royal Ascot in Berkshire, England, on June 16. Royal Ascot, an annual horseracing meeting attended by Queen Elizabeth II, is a highlight of the English social season.
The Ascot Opening Day scene in My Fair Lady always makes me want to wear hats! The crazier the better.
That whole movie is a tribute to wonderful hats.
Posted by: chipper at July 1, 2004 11:20 PMIt's fun to watch, but it just boggles my mind, that people spend so much money on something that's not only totally impractical as a hat, but totally impractical, period. You couldn't even sit next to someone without getting feathers in their face...
Posted by: Thinky at July 2, 2004 12:19 AMThere's only one kind of practical hat: the one that keeps both sun and rain off your head. All others are frippery, and I must say that it's not the bearers of the Y-gene that keep the business of producing frippery alive ...
I'm speaking as someone closely acquainted with one who wishes hats were even more popular.
Posted by: PyeCat at July 6, 2004 03:07 AMYes, but I would hardly call her typical for an XX'er.
I've decided that there are separate sub-species of people who live in the "society circles" of major metropolitan areas. Perhaps it's the smog, or maybe the constant fear of being spotted by the Society Pages reporter while shopping for groceries in a track suit, I don't know. But whatever the cause, it does seem to produce the strangest behaviors in both sexes...fripperies and all.
