Edge of Desolation

Since the current theme seems to be pictures, I thought I'd offer this view of the Badlands in South Dakota.

Man has certainly been responsible for terrible erosion damage as a result of careless landscape treatment, but Nature has done its bit from time to time as well. This particular process started a long time before the talking bipeds found North America.

They don't call 'em The Badlands for nuthin'.

It's the utterly flat, peaceful surface filled with grass and other greenery, that makes the erroded areas so eerie for me.

The transition between the green and the wasteland is why I took this picture. It's sad, realizing that the ground underneath the green will slowly wear away, which necessarily makes the green retreat further and further back.

On the other hand, the plain that the erosion dumps into looks reasonably fertile. I need to post one of those pictures for contrast.
