Bookzilla

This is kind of an interesting idea, that three students over on main campus have recently cooked up:

Bookzilla.com

(Their front page has a nice look, but hasn't been officially launched, so most of the links aren't functional.)

I confess to being somewhat dubious about the logistics of this enterprise. But, the proof is in the pudding, so we'll see what happens when they launch in the Fall.

The infamous Union Leader has a related article.

Wind

The wind is blowing tonight. It's not the steady wind that can wear a body down, it's the random chaotic wind that tosses a tree half a block away when your own balcony is still. It's a wind that wouldn't surprise you if it spawned a tornado.

It makes me feel free, or something else. I want to roam the night in a convertible with the top down. I want to stand on a hill with my arms stretched wide, looking up at the moon and the stars. I want, I want, I want ...

Being dissatisfied with one's life has probably prompted much progress, but it's not comfortable.

It's the kind of night where I want to change the world, or my own life. It's the kind of night where being alone isn't healthy, or at least being with someone would be better. Too bad.

It's the kind of night where regret claims you for what might have been, or when you shake loose again of the past and move on. I guess I'll know which when the dawn is past.

"I can hear the night wind howling,
and it's a high and lonesome sound"

Kinetic Scuptures

This looks like it's an absolute blast. It's too bad we're so spread out around the country/globe; I'd love to see what the lot of us could come up with for an entry:

"Kinetic Sculptures are amphibious, human powered works of art. Each May, Kinetic Sculptures from the eastern United States convene at the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) on Baltimore's Inner Harbor for the East Coast Championship race. [...] The eight-hour race covers 15 miles, mostly on pavement, but with two segments out in the harbor, one segment of thick mud, and one segment through sand."

Check out their website for some great photos.

The Frog and the Bank Loan

A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her name plate that her name is Patricia Whack. "Miss Whack, I'd like to geta $30,000 loan to take a holiday."

Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it's okay, he knows the bank manager.

Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral. The frog says, "Sure. I have this," and produces a tiny porcelain elephant. It's about an inch tall, bright pink, and perfectly formed.

Very confused, Patty explains that she'll have to consult with the bank manager and disappears into a back office. She finds the manager and tells him, "There's a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000, and he wants to use this as collateral." She holds up the tiny pink elephant. "I mean, what in the world is this?"

The bank manager looks back at her and says...

"It's a knickknack, Patty Whack. Give the frog a loan. His old man's a Rolling Stone."

[are you singing it now? *g*]
